almighty god (tim hughes) chosen by rachel
i can relate this song and i enjoy listening to it. most importantly it helps me worship God; which is always good.
trauermusik (hindemith) chosen by james
an extraordinary piece; although titled ‘ music of morning’ conveys real hope at the end.
amazing grace (john newton) chosen by laura
because it’s true and because it was my baptism song
safe as houses (aKING)chosen by lu
aKING are a south african band i discovered on my last trip there. i am not even really sure why I love this song so much; it means a lot to me as it reminds me of my time in south africa and I really love the unusual vocals. so yeah i guess that is why i love it; the lyrics are a bit depressing but i can relate to them and i think all of us can.
i’m not alone (calvin harris) chosen by jordan
i know he probably didn’t intend it to have any sort of meaning, but it just kinda reminds me that were not alone ….
no one’s gonna love you (band of horses) chosen by esther
i heard it for the first time on jools holland and it was proper lump-in-the-throat stuff. they were this grubby band singing one of the most simple, raw love songs i’d heard. ‘no one’s gonna love you more than i fo’ is at the same time a promise and a threat. the verses are pretty destructive and the chorus fairly ambiguous about whether love’s the cause or the cure. it gets to my heart and makes me think about my husband ben. and then about the limits of human love and that no man or woman’s going to love me more than God. and that there’s nothing i could do to make god love me less, even if my whole world fell apart i’d still have him.
the fox, the crow and the cookie (mewithoutyou) chosen by ben
i chose this song, based on the aesop tale ‘the fox and the crow’, the moral of which being, ‘do not trust flatterers!’. this is also a great bit of advice for us in worship. don’t open your music to sing praises if only to be told you sound great, otherwise the devil will get in there and snatch the praise away. it is a great song lyrically and i can’t stop singing it.
there will come a day (faith hill) chosen by fay
this song reminds me that even though there seems to be so much bad stuff going on around us, one day we will be with our father in heaven and there will be a day when none of the bad stuff will be allowed anymore. it just paints a really great picture for what is to come after this life!
hide and seak (imogen heap) chosen by beth
the first time i heard it, it was the backing song in a youtube video i was watching. i was captured immediately by the haunting harmonies and lyrics in this song. The only instruments on the track are her voice and a vocoder. i couldn’t stop listening to it and i still can’t!
stay young (oasis) chosen by matt
i suppose i say i like it cos i remember it from when i was younger.
rooftops (lostprophets) chosen by colleen
a few years ago i put together a playlist for my dad for one of his frome fm shows, and this song was on it. when he went to india shortly after that it was one of the only playlists he had on his ipod, and he then encountered a 14hr bus ride. so he just listened to it over and over again, and that song really stuck out to him because he liked the lyrics of the verses… about how will the world be changed when you’re gone, or if you will “make your mark”. that’s really relevant to him because he feels so strongly about changing the world, and what we can do while we’re here. it’s now one of his favourite songs and it just makes me smile and think of him when I hear it, and I feel really proud of the work that he does. so in short: this song is for my dad.
me and jesus (stellar kart) chosen by abi
this song reassures me that jesus is always there for me, no matter what happens; and about letting jesus into my life.
talk (coldplay) chosen by simon
eye lyke dis song as it talks about being able to live your dreams, and living your life to the full. like, you can do something that’s never been done before. it was an encouraging song for me when i was in bradford, and
unsure as to what i was going to do next. if you listen to the lyrics, you can actually pick out that the lines are for two characters, obviously brothers. and one guy is talking to the other about the uncertainty of his future. it reminds me that i can talk to god, his hand is on my life, and I can do anything with his help.
afghan (millencolin) chosen by zoe
and I like it because ummm…(not really sure) the lyrics make sense to me? does that work? o its kinda confusing, but yeah?
a man is in love (the waterboys) chosen by anna
i really loved the waterboys when I was about 15. i used to get so wistful listening to this, because i just couldn’t imagine anyone being in love with me like that – now i can listen to it knowing it really does happen, and it reminds me of the wonder of first being in love. slushy i know.
don’t worry be happy (bobby mcferrin) chosen by charlotte
i love it because every time i hear it, it makes me really happy and it makes me not worry, it just really cheers me up.
are you gonna go my way (lenny kravitz) chosen by nick
what do I like it? – well it’s just a great tune and reminds me of being a teenager. coupled with good memories of hanging out with mates in the summer of 1994. it also has a fantastic guitar solo…..what more could you ask for!
blanket and crib (okkervil river) chosen by sean
it is about how everyone is an innocent child reliant upon their mother when they are weak and helpless just after they are born. a lot more can be read into it, treating your neighbour as you wish to be treated because you were once the same as them, also that you are still a “child” to god, that, may not be will sheffs intended theme but it is something that i read into it. not to fight and what goes around comes around.
hurt (johnny cash) chosen by keith
this song, originally by nine inch nails, is full of remorse, regret, bitterness and loss. it’s one of the last songs recorded by cash before he died. a song that questions the value of a lifetime of earthly achievements – ‘you can have it all – my empire of dirt.’
